Janaki Ammal: The Pioneer Who Broke Barriers in Science

Janaki Ammal (1897–1984) was one of India’s first women scientists and a renowned botanist who made significant contributions to plant genetics and agricultural research. She is best known for her pioneering work on sugarcane breeding, which helped improve crop varieties in India. At a time when very few women pursued scientific careers, Janaki Ammal overcame social and professional barriers to earn international recognition. She also played an important role in conserving India’s rich biodiversity and native plant species. An interesting fact is that she became one of the first Indian women to earn a doctorate in botany. Her life continues to inspire generations of women in science and research.
